Bird Watching
New Taipei City is home to a wide variety of wild birds, with up to 466 species that can be observed throughout the year.
Birds are some of the most active and noticeable animals in our environment. You can see them in wetlands, parks, urban areas, suburbs, riversides, coastlines, and even in the mountains.

- The best time to observe land birds is between 7:00 and 11:00 AM. For wetland birds, it is the ideal time during the ebb tide, when they forageing most actively. You can find the birds easily as long as there are not typhoons or heavy rains.
- Never scare, harm, or capture wild birds. Unauthorized capture violates the Wildlife Conservation Act.
- A tripod is recommended when photographing birds. Birds are active and alert, making shoot up closely challenging. Patience and the lenses with high-resolution, and high-magnification are the key tips.
- In the northern coastal and northeastern areas of New Taipei City , you may see black kites (a type of eagle) soaring overhead in a stable weather. The recommended spots include Shen’ao Harbor in Ruifang, the coast near Yehliu, and the estuary of Huang Creek in Jinshan.
- When birdwatching, bring a telescope(7–10x for binoculars, 20–60x for monoculars), and a field guide to birds, and wearing comfortable, lightweight clothing in grayish tones that blend with the environment.
- Gongliao - Tianliaoyang Transportation: Take the Taiwan Railways to Gongliao Station. You can rent a bike nearby to reach Tianliaoyang. Ask local shopkeepers for directions. Or get off at Fulong Station and take a taxi for about 10 minutes alternatively.
- Wulai - Lakalu beside Tonghou River Transportation: From Xindian MRT Station, transfer to the Xindian Bus and get off at Wulai Terminal Station. Walk toward the shopping street and turn left after crossing the Tonghou River bridge to reach Wulai Elementary and Junior High School.
- Pinglin - Jiuxionggen Riverside Park Transportation: From Taipei's Gongbao Building or Xindian MRT Station, take the New Taipei Bus (every 30–90 minutes). Alternatively, take Bus Green 12 from MRT Xindian Station to Pinglin, or Bus 923 to the Pinglin Tourist Center.
- Taishan - Yixuekeng Nature Park: Take buses 637, 801, 616, or buses run by Chin Nan or San Chung Bus Companies, or local free shuttle buses in Taishan. Get off at the stops near the intersection of Sec. 2, Mingzhi Road, and Wencheng Road, and then walk up the hill to reach the park.
- Bali - Wazihwei Nature Reserve Transportation: Take the MRT to Guandu Station, then transfer to bus R13 and get off at Wazihwei stop. Alternatively, get off at Tamsui MRT Terminal, and take the ferry to Bali Left Bank, and then rent a bicycle to the destination.
- Wanli - Yehliu Transportation: Take the MRT to Tamsui Station, then transfer to a Keelung-bound bus operated by Tamsui Bus Company and get off at Yehliu. Buses depart every 30 minutes.
