Firefly Watching
Late April to early June is the best season for firefly watching in New Taipei City. Fireflies thrive in areas with clean air, unpolluted water, abundant surface cover, and no light pollution, making them an important indicator of ecological health. Taiwan is home to around 60 species of fireflies, and over 20 of them can be seen in New Taipei City.

- The most active time for fireflies is between 6:30 and 8:00 PM. Since fireflies are usually found in low-visibility, light-free mountainous areas, be sure to watch your step and go with companions.
- Fireflies love slightly humid and warm weather. Unless it’s extremely windy and cold, pouring rain, or the temperature suddenly drops, fireflies may still appear even in light rain. They're often more visible in the nights after the rain.
- To capture the scene of fireflies in motion, you need to turn off the flash, and use a tripod, and then set the aperture to the highest value, and expose for at least 10 seconds. Use a slow shutter to photograph them.
- Stay quiet. Loud noises can disturb air currents around you, which significantly affects fireflies. Noise also disrupts their courtship and other behaviors.
